Balkh residents take pessimistic view of Doha talks

BALKH: Civil and social activists in northern Balkh province have termed the Doha peace talks’ fruitless’ while calling for an immediate end to the Afghan quagmire.

At a rally on Thursday at the Provincial Council’s courtyard in Mazar-i-Sharif City, the provincial capital, they voiced apprehension over the escalation of war and insecurity in different parts of the country, urging the warring parties to end the conflict once and for all.

Participants, who carried pro-peace rallying slogans, lamented that war and violence in the country were taking sacrifices from the Afghan people every day.

They said Afghans were optimistic regarding peace talks and their results when they got underway, but they had currently come to believe they wouldn’t yield positive results.

The demonstration came as the peace negotiating team went to Doha for the second round of talks last month but no significant progress has been made so far.
