BALKH: Religious scholars and residents of northern Takhar province in a gathering on Tuesday condemned Abbas Stanekzai’s recent remarks and called for the continuation of peace talks inside the country.
Abbas Stanekzai, the deputy head of the Taliban’s political office in Doha, stressed the creation of an interim government in Afghanistan, calling President Ashraf Ghani’s presence an obstacle to the peace process.
His comments provoked many severe reactions from religious scholars and residents across the country, including Takhar, Logar, Nangarhar, Khost and some other provinces.
The participants who had gathered to announce support to the intra-Afghan peace talks and the republican system described Stanekzai’s remarks as demagogic and deceitful.
The gathering comes as the negotiating teams supposedly initiated the second round of peace negotiations in Doha to finalize the agenda but not significant progress has been made as the sides meet sporadically.
