Khalilzad likely to retain his position as Afghan peace envoy: Sources

KABUL: Former US President Donald Trump’s envoy for Afghanistan reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad will reportedly remain in his position, for the time being, three sources familiar with the issue stated to CNN.
No more specifics were released, but the State Department did not comment when asked about Khalilzad remaining on board.
However, this change is not typical, as all politically-appointed officials, especially those concerned with foreign policy issues, are usually replaced by an incoming administration.
For more than two years, Khalilzad, a diplomatic veteran, has been leading the Afghan peace process, serving as the key official from Washington to meet with both the Afghan government and the Taliban, as well as all other stakeholders and regional leaders to take the Afghan peace bid forward.
