Qatari Emir to ramp up efforts for truce in Afghanistan

KABUL: The Qatari Emir has pledged efforts for making a nationwide ceasefire possible in Afghanistan during the next phase of Afghan peace talks.
A statement released by the Presidential Palace said on Saturday read that the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani talked with Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Emir of Qatar, over the telephone.
During their initial conversation, Sheikh delivered his condolences to the Afghan nation over the death of Engineer Abdul Hakim Dalili, the Afghan envoy to Qatar, and promised all-out efforts to establish a ceasefire in the country.
Both sides also discussed and exchanged views on strengthening and expanding bilateral cooperation, especially foreign trade affairs.
This comes in the wake of intensive violence in the country and when two sides – currently on a three-week break from talks – are expected to meet again on January 5 and resume negotiations.
