KABUL: European Parliament says peace negotiations are the only way for settling the conflict in Afghanistan, asking the Taliban to declare a ceasefire because talks alongside violence would end up in futility.
Petras Auštrevičius, head of the European Parliament’s Committee on Relations with Afghanistan, has said that they would not support a government with extremist foundations.
The achievements made in Afghanistan over the past two decades should be protected and the ongoing violence should be reduced for a goodwill gesture towards peace, he told Pajhwok in an interview.
“I want the Taliban to accept ceasefire; because talks without ceasefire would end up futile, besides that, the Taliban should think about the future, you cannot destroy all the gains made…” Auštrevičius added.
He said that the Taliban should respect the rights of women, children and humans in general. The EU supports the active role of women in the society and education of children, he stressed.
