KABUL: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has called on the Afghan warring parties to “seize the historic opportunity” made available for achieving a durable peace in Afghanistan through negotiations.
The OIC in a statement on Tuesday said that Secretary-General of the Organization, Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen, made the remarks in the virtual Geneva Conference on Afghanistan 2020.
The two-day summit was co-hosted by the government of Afghanistan and Finland to show the solidarity of the international community with the Afghan people and the government in their efforts for peace and prosperity, as well as pledge financial support to Afghanistan’s development and reform.
The statement said that Secretary-General reiterated the OIC’s support to the Afghan people in achieving a “comprehensive and lasting national reconciliation, stability and development.”
For reaching long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan and beyond, “the decision and resolutions of the OIC Summit and the council of Foreign Ministers have called upon the OIC Member States to support the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned inclusive peace and reconciliation process,” the statement added.
