Atmar, Lyons discuss intra-Afghan talks, call for violence reduction


KABUL: Acting Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar met Deborah Lyons, the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, on Monday to discuss the ongoing peace talks among other topics.  

At the meeting, the two sides had discussions regarding the Geneva conference, which is predicted to be held in November, precisely conferring on the conference’s plans and the present donor capacities and programs. 

The ongoing peace talks, the establishment of a nation-wide ceasefire, violence reduction, and regional and global support for the negotiations were also among matters raised for discussion.

Meanwhile, Atmar emphasized the UN’s constructive role in building a regional and global consensus on the peace talks’ success.

He also appreciated the UN’s collaboration and alliance in Afghanistan for over 19 years and expressed gratitude for the bloc’s support and optimism regarding peace talks.
