Paktia Province


Paktia province is located in the southeastern region of Afghanistan around 1500 meters above the sea level. Paktia has 5 large and small districts, most of whose residents live in mountainous districts. During Rabbani’s rule, its census was nearly 500,000. However, in Paktia, unofficial censuses by health and aid agencies are currently showing a population of up to 1.5 million.Paktia has a long history, it is considered as the center of the ancient Aryans and it is mentioned in history books that all the Pashtuns migrated to other parts of the country at that time.

Major Security Incident(s): The biggest attack since the peace talks between the Taliban and the US was a car bomb attack on a facility. Sometimes armed attacks happen in the districts. 

Factors contributing to violence: As Paktia shares a border with a province like Paktika, the armed opposition groups (AOGs) want to reach to other provinces using this route.
