Afghans dub launch of peace talks ‘dawn of joy’

BALKH: Youth and public representatives of northern Balkh’s provincial council in a gathering joyfully embraced the launch of intra-Afghan talks in Doha, stressing that the landmark opportunity offered them a glimmer of hope about a peaceful future.

An inaugural ceremony was held in Mazar-i-Sharif city, the provincial capital, on Sunday to launch the Nation Welfare Charity Foundation in the presence of some heads of government departments, representatives of the people in the provincial council and youth.

All the participants expressed their immense optimism about the initiation of the intra-Afghan peace talks.

General Amin Darrasufi, a local public representative, who spoke at the occasion, expressed hope and satisfaction with the start of the all-Afghan peace negotiations.

He recalled that over the last 40 years, war and insecurity had taken a heavy toll on the Afghan people “and thus it’s high time that the bloodshed in the country had ended.”

Darrasufi termed the launch of peace talks in Qatar the dawn of happiness and tranquility for the war-ravaged people, hoping that the Afghan citizens would live in an atmosphere of peace and stability from now onwards.

Several young participants of the gathering said that peace was one of the long-standing aspirations of the Afghan people, adding optimism for peace had been established with the beginning of the talks.

The remarks come as the opening ceremony of intra-Afghan peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government negotiating teams began in Qatar on Saturday to put an end to the decades-long conflict in Afghanistan.
