Prisoner release: 9 death row Taliban commanders freed

KANDAHAR: Nine key Taliban commanders, who were also on a death row, have been released from the southern Kandahar’s central prison, local authorities confirmed on Monday.

Ahmad Baheer Ahmadi, Kandahar governor’s spokesman, said the freed commanders were among the list of the 400 controversial Taliban inmates whose release was sanctioned by the consultative Loya Jirga a few weeks ago.

He added that “some of the released notorious commanders were sentenced to death.”

This comes as the prisoner release process had arrived at a halt for a while after 80 of the total 400 ‘hardcore’ prisoners were released by the government, which has so far remained reluctant to free the remaining contentious Taliban inmates with some reasons being a couple of foreign countries’ objections and the government’s justification that the Taliban haven’t released its security forces too.
