KABUL: Afghan Acting Foreign Minister Hanif Atmar says the remaining hard-core Taliban inmates are going to be released by the end of next week to pave the ground for the launch of intra-Afghan talks.

Hanif Atmar was quoted by Radio Free Europe on Friday as saying that “we will have released by the end of next week over 5,600 of Taliban’s prisoners.”

In an online discussion hosted by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), he further said “the Taliban will have to honor their promise that these people will not go back to the battlefield.”

This comes as the Chairman of Afghanistan’s High Council for National Reconciliation on Thursday said the long-anticipated intra-Afghan talks between the government and the Taliban would begin next week; however, the Taliban immediately refuted that possibility.
