Herat clerics voice concern at mounting civilian casualties
HERAT: Religious clerics and tribal elders in western Herat province on Tuesday voiced their grave concern at the recent uptick in violence and civilian casualties across the country.
“Innocent people are still being killed on a daily basis in the country due to continuous war and terrorist attacks, all of which are against the Islamic teachings and humanitarian values,” they lamented.
Demanding an immediate cease to such attacks, the religious scholars and tribal elders jointly urged all the parties to the conflict to seize this window of opportunity and make peace.
This comes as there has been some progress made in the peace process because the seemingly main stumbling block of prisoner release has been resolved. President Ashraf Ghani has recently decreed the release of the 400 contentious Taliban inmates following receiving a mandate from the Consultative Loya Jirga.
