Taliban offensives intensify in Jawzjan’s Capital


KABUL: Heavy confrontation between the Afghan forces and the Taliban in Sheberghan, the capital of northern Jawzjan province, enters a second day with the insurgent group capturing key locations including the province’s prison.

Taliban released a video on Saturday morning showing prisoners escaping Jawzjan prison.

Some key areas in the city remain contested for the last 24 hours. 
Taliban took over the provincial governor’s compound on Friday, but it was retaken by Afghan forces. However, source said that Taliban recaptured the provincial governor’s compound, the municipality building and the Jawzjan prison.

According to sources, violence has escalated in the Panjsad Family area in the first police district of Shebrghan where is the residential building of Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum.

A senior member of Junbish-e-Milli party, Sayed Shamsuddin Sadat, said that 150 members of the public uprising forces loyal to the party and led by commander Ali Sarwar have arrived to Sheberghan to help other forces on the battleground.

Yar Mohammad Dostum, Dostum’s son, is commanding the popular uprising troops in Sheberghan in fight against the Taliban.

On Friday, the Taliban gained control of Zaranj city, the capital of Nimroz province in southwestern Afghanistan, making it the first province to fall to the Taliban since the US announced its withdrawal from the country
