KABUL: Around 650 US troops would remain in Afghanistan after the September 11 deadline, reported Reuters from US officials who wished to remain anonymous.
CNN, however, put this number as high as 1000, claiming the remainder troops allegedly would help secure the US Embassy in Kabul and the Hamid Karzai International Airport.
Washington has called for NATO to secure the Kabul airport for an undetermined amount of time.
The anonymous officials also claimed that the US is well ahead of the September deadline, being days away from a completed withdrawal.
The US stopped announcing the progress in their withdrawal after completing around 50 percent earlier in June.
