Taliban Urge US to Honor Doha Peace Deal

KABUL: In a recent interview with a Japanese news agency, Suhail Shaheen, spokesperson for the Taliban’s political office, said that the group has been continuing negotiations with US officials behind the scenes.

He told NHK that the Taliban are working on the release of the remaining prisoners of the insurgency and the UN’s removal of the group’s senior members from its sanctions list.

According to him, the Taliban have been urging the US to honor the deal they made with the Taliban in February 2020 in Doha.
While more than half of the US troops’ withdrawal has been completed in Afghanistan, no meaningful advances had been made in peace negotiations.

During President Ashraf Ghani’s visit to Washington this Friday, US President Joe Biden assured the Afghan government of their assistance with Afghanistan.
