KABUL: The withdrawal of the remaining American troops from Afghanistan is a difficult decision, an influential US senator said.
“There is no doubt that withdrawing from Afghanistan is a difficult decision,” Mitchell McConnell said, adding that the US would not leave behind a stable system.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Republican lawmaker cautioned that the US withdrawal could lead to a rise in terrorist violence in the war-devastated country.
He also said that the progress Afghanistan has made in various areas, especially progress on women’s rights, could be jeopardized, if not lost entirely.
“Of course, these truths do not obviate the fact that staying simply means spending more money and putting US citizens in harm’s way for unclear gains,” McConnell concluded.
